Oct 16, 1963: year she met malcolm,
“it was in the foyer of the Brooklyn criminal court. Malcolm had come to follow up on the aftermath of some 600 people who were arrested in the summer of 1963 demonstrations at Down State Medical Center site in Brooklyn which was a fight for construction jobs for black and Puerto Ricans. He had no bodyguards, he was just by himself and he was immediately surrounded by admiring young blacks, mostly people from Brooklyn CORE. Seeing all the black people rush toward him, naturally I wanted to meet him too, although I wasn’t sure he would talk to a nonblack.
